Revenue Portfolio Theory

Most companies are overweight one way of making money and do not know it. This keynote gives a room of leaders a way to see growth as a portfolio, and the discipline to manage it like one.

The big idea

Investors do not put everything into one stock. Yet most companies bet everything on one way of generating revenue, then panic when it stops working.

This talk reframes growth as a portfolio of six distinct revenue mechanisms, each with its own cost, behavior, and shelf life. Some are permanent. Some are perishable. When a company leans too hard on one, growth feels great right up until that mechanism decays, and every channel eventually decays.

Drawing on three exits and a career spent building revenue engines, I show the room how to see what they actually hold, recognize which mechanism they are overweight, and rebalance on purpose instead of in a panic. People leave with a new way to think about growth, and a model they can apply to their own company before they reach the parking lot.

What the room leaves with

Ideas they can use Monday

i.

A new mental model: growth as a portfolio to manage, not a single tactic to perfect.

ii.

The six revenue mechanisms, and how to recognize which one their company is overweight.

iii.

How to spot a decaying channel before it shows up in the forecast.

iv.

A simple way to allocate budget and effort across mechanisms with intention.

v.

The difference between permanent and perishable tactics, and why it changes how you invest.

vi.

A framework they can run on their own business the same week.

I did not arrive at this from a whiteboard. I arrived at it from carrying a quota, building go-to-market engines, and selling companies. Three exits and four Inc. 5000 honors.

Audiences can tell the difference between a speaker performing expertise and an operator sharing it. My goal is never the standing ovation. It is the leader who emails a week later to say they changed something because of the talk.
